Train Tips

Travel smarter, cheaper and more relaxed by train. A few handy things to know before you leave.

When

Travel off-peak

Outside rush hour it is quieter and often cheaper. Avoid the busy morning and early evening and you will more often get a seat, sometimes at a lower fare.

Cheaper

Travel together

With a group ticket or a day pass for several travellers the price per person drops considerably. Plan a day out with friends or family and share the costs.

Cheaper

Watch out for deals

Travel operators and supermarkets regularly sell discounted day tickets. A little planning ahead can easily save you half the price.

  • Look out for seasonal promotions
  • Compare single tickets with a day pass
  • Book popular days early
On the way

Grab a bike for the last stretch

Many stations have shared bicycles (OV-fiets) waiting for you. An easy way to cover the last kilometres to your destination without waiting for a bus.

When

Pick your day wisely

Weekends and public holidays are often quieter and come with better off-peak discounts. Ideal for a relaxed trip without any rush.

Plan smart

Check your journey beforehand

Before leaving, check for engineering works and pick a quieter connection if needed. With some slack in your planning, travelling is a lot more relaxed.
